Originally aboriginal population of Brazil numbered somewhere from 2 to 6 millions of people. As far as Brazilians didn't develop much in 1500 Brazil became Portuguese colony. Independent Empire of Brazil was established only in 1822 by Portuguese prince Pedro VI. This independence was given to Brazil by Portugal and Britain. In 1888 slavery was abolished and great number of immigrants from Europe, Asia and Japan came to Brazil in order to settle on the territory of this country. This endless stream of immigrants gave rise to industrialization. In 1889 with the help of “coffee” aristocracy military revolution occurred in Brazil and Empire of Brazil was ruined. During the next forty years the country was governed by different presidents, all of them were military men. Hight level of inflation and unstable political situation in the country caused economic crisis.
In 1984 the law in favour of direct elections was passed. It's also necessary to mention that voters resolved not to restore the previous Brazilian constitutional monarchy.
